Playing the waiting game

(work )

My interview on Monday went well I think. I met with the director of Development and the VP of Engineering. I really think that this would be a good fit for me and them. I have the kind of experience they're looking for and they seem like a company I could enjoy working for. It seems like a very relaxed, friendly environment and there's apparently no formal dress code (both definite pluses). At this point I'm just waiting to hear back to see if they want me to come in for a second interview. I'm just hoping it's just for a chance to meet more people and not a "technical" interview, but I suppose we'll see if it happens.

Back to Reality

(personal life | work )

Today was my first day back at work since Thursday. I took Friday off as part of my vacation in Bar Harbor. I had a pretty good time even though it rained both Friday and Saturday and didn't really clear up until I had to leave on Sunday. I got a chance to see my folks again and visit with my sister Sam and her husband Anthony and the new baby, Kaeleigh. I've got pictures that I'll post as soon as I get home tonight (didn't have the time or energy to do it yesterday). *UPDATE* The pictures are up.

I will be leaving work earlier than normal today though, as I have an interview at 3 in Cambridge. A company I had sent my resume out to through HotJobs finally got around to calling candidates (something I'm familiar with as we've done the same thing here) and I set up an interview. We'll see if this one works out better than the last. It's definitely a better fit for my skills I think and is a true developer position, as opposed to the other job I interviewed for. The company is actually located right down the street from the coffee house Sarah works at.

19 days and counting to my real vacation. It can't come fast enough at this point.

Another week in the books

(personal life )

Another work week is over. Didn't make it to the gym this morning as Jen convinced me to go out to breakfast with her instead. I probably should have considering I ate so many Krispy Kreme donuts yesterday (I picked up an order of 14.5 dozen yesterday, and I ate more than my fair share). I figured that the camping trip should offset that somewhat as I usually work my butt off while we're out there. Unfortunately, Shane and I are going alone again and he couldn't get Sunday off so it'll be just another overnighter.

Dave reminded me today that I'm just 4 weeks away from my trip out to the west coast. I'm really looking forward to this trip: a couple Sox games in Anaheim, a trip to Yosemite to camp, and a drive down to San Diego for the Comicon. Not to mention that the last time I saw Dave was when he was out here in the winter. I just have to make sure that I have all the money I need before I go, but it won't be a problem.

3x Thursday: 06/17/y2k+4: Roommates

(3xThursday )

Well so much for posting every day this week... But let's keep the week moving with 3XThursday, compliments of Missy

  1. Have you ever had a roommate? If so, do you like living with other people, or would you rather have your own space?
It really depends on the situation. I've had several roommates over the years. Some good, some bad. While I consider Dave to be one of my best and closest friends, I could never share an apartment with him again. After 3 years of living together in various places I know enough that his idiosyncrasies would bug me and mine would do the same to him. Living on your own is nice if you can afford it.
  2. If you've had roommates, got any horror stories? If not, if you had to, would you get a roommate, or get a 2nd job to pay for rent?
Probably my worst stories all come from the house I shared with 8 other people (not all at the same time, the max in the house at one time was 6 + me). We moved in September and within two weeks the landlord starting showing the apartment and had someone who was going to put down money for next year by October. We tried to ask for an extension, but because of extenuating circumstances (he thought there were only 5 people living there when there was 7 because the realtor told us to say that) we didn't get it. There was a lot of finger pointing and people got mad at each other and things just went severely down hill from there. Shane and Sarah moved out first, mostly because of Dave. Dave has a habit of not knowing when people don't want him to be there. Jenn and Gary left in the summer after spending months in their room avoiding both Dave and I. Their replacements (when we finally found them, we had to float the balance of the rent until we did) were hit and miss. One was a naval cadet said "doesn't soap just make water wetter" as excuse to why he didn't use soap when he washed his dishes. The other was a very nice young woman who going through a messy breakup and was just glad to have a place to stay.
The worst part of the situation as a whole was the fact that I paid all the bills, and people would repeatedly not pay their portion on time, so I was constantly playing the "let's not bounce a rent check" game. Needless to say after the whole ordeal I thought it better to live on my own for a while.
  3. Describe the ideal roommate.
Shane is pretty much the ideal roommate for me. We enjoy doing stuff together, but have lives of our own. It also helps that we both are reasonable people. Sharing space with someone is all about the give and take.

Bonus: What *is* it about having one's own space that is so appealing?
What is about owning anything? It's a feeling that you can do what ever you want, whenever you want because it's yours.

No, I'm not dead

(personal life )

I haven't posted much lately, but I really have no excuse not to. Work has been rather quiet to the point that I'm left to my own devices for most of the day. I've been trying to be proactive about certain upcoming projects, but that doesn't always work out. Personally, I've had a lot of free time as well. So much so, that I've polished off another game (Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga for GBA) in my "to play" pile.

The next coming weeks probably won't be as quiet. This weekend will be a camping trip to Vermont. Hopefully this time Shane and I will have some people to join us. I'm looking forward to trying out the new pack I got. Now I'll be able to carry a whole lot more up to the site (it's about a 10 minute walk from where we have to park). The following weekend Jen and I will be going up to Bar Harbor to spend the weekend with my parents and my sister Sam's family. It'll be my first chance to see my new niece (I'm such a horrible uncle sometimes...).

I'm going to try to make it a goal to post everyday this week, and hopefully a habit will follow from that. We'll see how it goes...
