The Crying Game (3 stars)
I'll be honest, I refused to see this movie for a long time because I knew it featured a transsexual. Something about the whole deal gave me the heeby-jeebies. People change. I'm much more open about a lot different things now, so I thought I would give The Crying Game a chance. I had no idea what the movie was about, outside of the fact that one of the main characters falls in love with a transsexual without realizing it.
When the movie first started, and the plot is laid for Fergis to meet Dill, I had no idea where the movie was going. Fergis seems to form a relationship with the soldier, Jody (Forest Whitaker did a pretty good job pulling of the black, cricket playing soldier). Of course, Jody dies, the British army attacks Fergis' IRA buddies, and he flees. He had made a promise to Jody to tell Dill that he was thinking about her. A bizarre relationship forms (well it seemed bizarre to me, because I knew what Fergis didn't) between the two, until the uncomfortable sex scene where Fergis discovers Dill is packing meat.
Fergis is torn by his disgust with the situation, his feelings for Dill, and his promise to Jody. It's at this point, where Fergis' IRA buddies come back into the picture and want Fergis to pull one more job. Fergis is stuck in the middle of too many rocks and doesn't know how to get out of it.
The movie ended up being enjoyable. I only looked at the clock in the beginning, trying to figure out how long the back story was going to take. There's some shocking moments (well, if you've read this, the big one won't be a shock), murder, betrayal, love; all the ingredients for a good drama. It just didn't hit me quite right though, so while I enjoyed the movie, I probably wouldn't rent it again.
